…both approaches “carve” a field into smaller pieces to better represent the unique
conditions and patterns occurring in the field.  Zones pre-partitions it into relatively
large, irregular areas that are assumed to be homogenous—discrete polygons.
Surfaces, on the other hand, process field samples for an estimate of each factor at
grid cells throughout a uniform analysis grid—continuous gradient.
